What kinds of microphones are there?
Microphones range from dynamic, condenser and ribbon.
Dynamic microphones operate on an electromagnetic principle using a diaphragm that is attached to a coil of wire. They are the easiest to use as they are plug and play but are less sensitive when compared to the other types.
Condenser microphones, unlike dynamic microphones, are capable of capturing those much quieter sounds with a high degree of accuracy. They work by creating an electric charge between its diaphragm and a backplate, therefore needing external power to help charge its backplate like a capacitor which is provided by the 48V phantom power that most preamplifiers have. Condenser microphones are much more delicate and expensive than dynamic microphones.
Ribbon microphones are a type of dynamic microphone. However, they use an extremely thin strip of metal suspended in a strong magnetic field, unlike the moving coil that vibrates that’s present in a standard dynamic microphone. Ribbon mics were first introduced in the 1920s and are known for their unique sonic characteristics by capturing frequencies with great accuracy (particularly the high end).
Can a specific type be better for certain recording situations?
A Dynamic microphone is generally used on instruments with a lot of low-mid energy and vocals in live situations. Condenser microphones are best used on vocals and instruments with more mid-high frequencies. They are the preferred type of microphones used in studios. Ribbon microphones are the most natural mics that you can use to capture the sound of an instrument, a voice, and even the ambience of a room. They are used mainly for capturing crisp and clear vocals or instruments.
Do all necessary accessories come with my microphone?
Different microphones come with different amounts of accessories with some simply having just the microphone and some with accessories like a clip, shock mount, windshield/pop filters, cables or carry cases. Make sure to check the description of the product to know what it includes.
Can a microphone work without an audio interface?
MusicMajlis has a wide range of USB microphones that has a built-in preamplifier that allows you to simply plug and use easily without the need of an audio interface.
