In 1956, the first shotgun mic was produced, titled MD82, followed by in 1980, a deal to supply the airline Lufthansa with headsets. Between then and now, Sennheiser has become a highly respected name in the professional audio space. In addition, as part of their drive to become more consumer oriented, they have launched various home-use audio equipment like soundbars, home theatre systems, and casual-listening headphones and earphones.

Earphones and Headphones
Senheisser makes both consumer audio wear, and studio-based equipment. Their Momentum True Wireless Earbuds and HD450BT headphones are two of many Sennheiser consumer products that take audio reproduction to another level. As for their studio headphones, they have the HD25 Light on their lower end providing a flat response sound and the HD300 Pro on the higher ends providing great value for money with its comfortable fit, aptly separated audio, and great natural sound. These are closed back, meaning there is no leakage or interaction of sound with the exterior ambient sound of the headphone. Studio Headphones are designed to reproduce sound with a flat frequency response. By not colouring the audio with preset modifications, an artist will be able to pick errors in an audio sample. This gives the content creator a chance to rectify and improve the audio. Apart from Studio Headphones, they also produce DJ Headphones aimed at working professionals who require the top audio quality and significant isolation from loud environments. For these artists, Senheissers, HD 205, HD8 DJ, and IE40 Pro (in-ear monitor) are recommended. In-ear monitors have the same functionality as studio headphones, but with the difference of being an earphone instead of a bulkier headphone. DJ headphones need to have a closed-back for sound isolation, more sturdy swivel hinges for live use and typically have a greater emphasis on its bass response. And apart from durability, they should also be comfortable for prolonged use.
Microphones
As with most professional audio companies, Sennheiser also makes dynamic, condenser, and instrument mics. In their wired dynamic microphone range, they have the e835, e845, and the e865. While the e835 makes for a perfect starter dynamic microphone kit, the e845 is the most optimised, and valued microphone offered by Sennheiser. Dynamic microphones operate on an electromagnetic principle using a diaphragm that is attached to a coil of wire. They are the easiest to use as they are plug and play but are less sensitive when compared to the other types. Dynamic Microphones are best used on stage and for events where durability and ease of use (without sacrificing on the audio front) are favoured. In addition to their wired lineup, they also have the immensely easier-to-use wireless mic systems that use dynamic mics. The XS wireless range is top-end aimed at gigging artists and frequent users, while the Digital 6000 and Digital 9000 series is ideal for larger groups with an audio technician who can assist at the helm of the receiver. In a wireless microphone system, the audio signals from multiple pairs of wireless dynamic microphones are sent to a transmitter which is paired with a central receiving hub that can be outputted to a device like the PA System.

Sennheiser also makes dedicated condenser mics, both for vocals and for instruments to be used under a studio setting. In a unique setting, Sennheiser has managed to design a condenser microphone to look like a stereotypical dynamic microphone with its advantageous rugged build and easy-to-use form factor. This is available in their e965 model currently. A similar setup is also available in their e935 and e945 models, with the difference of being a dynamic super cardioid instead of a condenser microphone. Condenser Microphones, unlike Dynamic Microphones, are capable of capturing quieter sounds with a high degree of accuracy. They work by creating an electric charge between its diaphragm and a backplate. Owing to this complex mechanism, Condenser Microphones need external power to help charge its backplate like a capacitor. This conduction is provided by the 48V phantom power that most Preamplifiers and Audio Interfaces have. Sennheiser’s MK4 and MK8 are professionally built and purposed condenser microphones for vocal recording. These are certainly not the most affordable in the market, but hold value for years on end. Both are large-diaphragm mics with warm sounds and very low self-noise. The MK4 has a one-inch capsule while the MK8 has two one inch diaphragms that produce five independent polar patterns that can be selected with a dedicated switch. As for Sennheiser’s instrument condenser mics, they have a variety to suit string instruments, drums and percussion, and wind instruments. The e614, e602, e604, e906, MKH8040 are a few reputed models from their collection. Instrument mics by purpose are used to record certain frequency ranges with clarity and depth.
